Highest case numbers in Great Britain since the beginning of the pandemic
With 6,634 new registered cases of corona infection, the UK has reached the highest level in one day since the beginning of the pandemic. This was announced by the responsible government authority on Thursday. However, significantly less testing took place in spring – meaning that more cases remained undetected. A further 40 people died of or with a coronavirus infection.

With more than 40,000 deaths, the United Kingdom is in absolute numbers the country most severely affected by the pandemic in Europe. In view of the sharp rise in numbers, stricter protective measures are again in place: Pubs and restaurants in England have to close at 22.00 hours. In addition, compulsory masks have been extended to cabs and other stores. The government called on workers to work from home again if possible.

Leading health experts consider the measures to be not far-reaching enough. Stricter rules already apply in Scotland and Northern Ireland – with a few exceptions, different households are no longer allowed to meet.

More than 16,000 new infections in France
In France, more than 16,000 people were newly infected with the coronavirus within 24 hours. Since Wednesday evening, 16,096 new cases of infection have been registered, the health authorities announced on Thursday evening. This is a new record since the introduction of large-scale testing for the novel coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the corona hotspot Spain has become the first country in Western Europe to break the 700,000 mark of registered infections. The Ministry of Health in Madrid reported 10,653 new infections on Thursday evening, bringing the total number of cases to more than 704,000. Spain is followed by France with about 520,000 infections, followed by Great Britain (410,000) and Italy (300,000). In Germany, around 280,000 cases have been counted so far, in Austria 41,447.

The number of citizens who died with Covid-19 on Thursday in Spain was, according to official figures, over 31,000, although here Spain is clearly behind Great Britain (around 42,000) and Italy (just under 36,000) and roughly on a par with France.
